Actually, the ferryman is Charon (not the Grim Reaper), who transports the dead across the River Styx (named for the goddess Styx, who is also aboard on this particular excursion) from the land of the living to the underworld (i.e., Hades) – the land of the dead. Traditionally, a relative would place a coin in the mouth of the deceased to pay Charon for the ride. Styx stands beside the pot of gold coins that represents a heckuva lot of trips. One passenger clearly doesn’t want to get to his destination, but his fate has already been decided.
